PhD student’s diary: can a building suck anyone’s dick?

OK, so this is pretty interesting from my dissertation’s point of view! There I was exiting the office in order to grab something to eat for lunch from the nearby supermarket and then I saw this written on the supermarket’s wall:

It’s a bit difficult to see what it reads, but someone has written there “suck my dick Hanken”. And, to clarify, Hanken (School of Economics) is one of the leading Finnish business schools that has strong connections to the Swedish speaking minority here in Finland.

Now if you think about the message, “suck my dick Hanken”, it’s actually pretty interesting! Can a brand suck someone’s dick? Or what about a building? Basically what has happened here is that someone has given agency to a building, a brand, or them both. Sociomaterial researchers would be thrilled about this! Not only has someone given agency to an inanimate object, but they also want to engage in pleasurable activities with it!

Sociomaterialism, stance that acknowledges the role nonhumans have in organizations/social relations/etc., is a nascent stream of research especially within organization studies, but in the picture above someone has made a beautiful intellectual statement that we should adopt it faster! Whoever wrote this piece should be made the head of Sociomaterial Research Group in Hanken or Aalto.

It always warms my heart to see someone loving the sociomaterial approach to research so much that they actually want a BJ from a building. Furthermore, that statement gives rise to sooooo many other interesting research avenues: 1) how does a building give a BJ?, 2) how does it feel to receive a BJ from a building?, 3) what kind of discursive practices are there revolving around this fascinating stream of oral pleasures?. Possibilities are endless…

(Disclaimer: if it wasn’t clear, I think Hanken is cool and whoever figures out how buildings can give BJs, let me know)
